Welcome to the Texas Avenue web page.

In February of 2002, Orange County kicked-off a Roadway Conceptual Analysis (RCA) Study to determine the most appropriate improvements for widening Texas Avenue given the unique character of the corridor and the future transportation demands projected for it.  The Texas Avenue study limits were from just south of Oak Ridge Road to just south of Holden Avenue, a length of approximately 1.5 miles.  During the RCA Study, numerous improvement options and features were developed and evaluated. In addition to evaluating four-lane and five-lane widening concepts, improvements to the following corridor features were examined: drainage system, landscaping, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, utilities, and traffic signals. The RCA Study identified the need to upgrade Texas Avenue from two to four lanes. The construction of the Millennia Mall, redevelopment of the Orange Blossom Trail corridor, and the eventual upgrade and extension of Holden Avenue between John Young Parkway and US 441 (with an upgraded intersection at Texas Avenue) further support the need for the Texas Avenue Widening project.

On November 11, 2003, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners approved the Texas Avenue RCA Study and authorized the staff to begin the process to implement the recommendations of the study.

Final design activities are currently underway to prepare construction plans and right-of-way maps for the widening of Texas Avenue.  The improvements include widening from a two-lane rural roadway to a four-lane divided urban roadway.  The improvements will include 11-foot wide travel lanes; a 15.5-foot, raised, grassed median; concrete sidewalks; on-road bicycle lanes; street lighting; landscaping and curb and gutter inlets for drainage.  The stormwater runoff from the roadway will be collected by an enclosed drainage system and piped to stormwater retention ponds.

The duration of the design phase is approximately 18 months.  The status for this project and all other County roadway projects can be viewed by selecting the Monthly Roadway Capital Improvement Program Report on our Transportation Planning Division web site.  The right-of-way acquisition and construction phases will follow.
