Job Description: Associate Medical Examiner

General Functions

Assists the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner in performing the duties associated with medicolegal investigation of death including scene investigation, examination and/or autopsy and courtroom testimony.

Representative Duties & Assignments

  • Performs autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death.
     
  • Reviews items related to autopsies such as hospital charts, medical examiner investigator reports, law enforcement agency reports and postmortem results.
     
  • Investigates unnatural deaths by performing scene investigations, gathering information and responding to hospitals.
     
  • Serves as an expert witness in depositions, grand jury sessions, trials and conferences with attorneys.
     
  • Participates in conferences with family members, law enforcement, attorneys and other individuals to provide information on investigations and autopsies.
     
  • Trains personnel such as forensic technicians, investigators and paramedical staff.
     
  • Presents lectures for students, officers and general community.
     
  • Provides information to citizens, groups, news media and the general public.
     
  • Writes scientific papers and presentation materials.
     
  • Attends seminars and lectures for continuing education in forensic medicine.
     
  • Performs other duties of a comparable level as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an approved school of medicine and possession of a current license to practice medicine in the State of Florida as required by the Florida Department of Professional Regulations.

Mandatory Special Requirements

Must be board certified in anatomic or anatomical/clinical pathology or board eligible, with certification obtained within one year of employment, by the American Board of Pathology. Must obtain board certification in forensic pathology within three year of qualification or employment. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.
