Art which expresses the beauty and health of our country and which is created by Orange County employees is on display in the front stairwell of the Orange County Administration Building, 201 S. Rosalind Avenue. Citizens are encouraged to increase both their physical and mental wellness by climbing the stairwells to view and contemplate the art as they go from one floor to another. Employees also were encouraged to express their opinions about the art by voting for their favorites.
Who Created The Art? Any Orange County Employee could apply for the opportunity to display their art.
What Kind Of Art Was Allowed And When And Where Was It Created? Selected artists painted directly on the wall within a rectangle three feet high by four feet wide. The area was demarcated with a painted frame. The paintings were done on the employee's own time on off-hours between June 12 and June 29. The theme of the art in some way reflects the "health and beauty of our country".
How Were The Artists Selected? Artists who wished to participate submitted a picture of any artwork they had created that showed their skill and ability in paint or a medium that could be permanently applied to a wall surface. Members of the Orange County Communications office and the Arts & Cultural Affairs office selected employee artists. Each selected artist submitted a sketch of their StairWELLness painting for review by a StairWELLness Review Committee which reviewed the sketch for appropriateness in a public building and connection to the theme. The StairWELLness Review Committee was composed of three leaders in the community.
When Is Art Available For Viewing? The public is invited to view the artwork anytime the Orange county Administration Building is open.
What Are The Rewards And Responsibilities Of The Artists? All the selected artists were given a certificate for meals at one of Wall Street's great restaurants and tickets to the SAK Comedy Lab's "The Viewer's Choice". Artist Hector Clemente was awarded a grand prize weekend-on-the-town package including a night's stay at the Grand Bohemian hotel and a gift certificate for Sam Snead's Restaurant. Artists provided their own design, materials and execution of their design. Only non-flammable, non-toxic paints (i.e. acrylic or latex) were used.
How Was The Grand Prize Winner Selected? Orange County employees voted for their favorite painting through an intranet site (one vote allowed per employee). |
